You’ve got to hand it to Victoria Beckham. All she wants to do is make her customers happy by providing wardrobe solutions for busy lives. It’s with this mantra in mind that she designed her latest , which had all the VB hallmarks that have come to personify her brand: sophisticated, uncomplicated, super-flattering, fashion-relevant clothes. In short, VB nailed what she said she was going to do on the tin: make runway clothes that could walk straight off the catwalk and into your closet.

‘The runway looks are the first things to go in the store,’ she explained backstage, driving home the point by looking down at her own outfit. 'I just grabbed this and threw it on this morning,’ she said of the pieces she was wearing: an oversized black wool sweater and slim long black skirt with her trademark heels.

Asked to sum up her collection in three words, she said: ‘Sexy – we like how that sounds better than how it looks written down, obviously! But we talked a lot about it being sexy, how it feels sexy to wear.’ David certainly looked approving of the looks on the front row, bouncing Harper on his knee.

‘Liberating’ was her second word. ‘In terms of the design process, it was fun to work on – deconstructing materials, all those textures were great to work with.’

And ‘bounce’ was word number three. ‘Making things cosy but light, with a real cool, young, fresh feel. I’m challenging myself every season. I want to push it, put my own fashion stamp on it.’

It’s true that VB has steered away from her former body-con silhouette – and has been roundly criticised for doing so. Indeed, there isn’t a backstage interview that doesn’t call her on it, to which she says: ‘The collection is really, really big, there’s so much more than what you’ve just seen on the runway. I do still have sexy dresses but I have to get my fashion message across in eight minutes, so I need to keep it focused.’

But this collection should help to silence that constant question: the silhouette here was body conscious, but in an intelligent way that felt modern. Knitwear twisted around the torso, trousers clung to hips, skirts were patchworked in shine and sheer and skimmed over thighs, leaving a bare flash of leg above the new VB ankle boot. As for the many coats, they were all equally flattering. In fact, this could be your new go-to winter coat brand.

So what’s next for brand Victoria Beckham? Retail is firmly on the agenda, she says, revealing that her second flagship store would open in Asia, though she wouldn’t disclose where. And, yes, in the future she would love to launch cosmetics and fragrance.

Victoria Beckham: onwards and upwards.
