It's a talent to be able to look a yawning hippopotamus straight in the face and see it as something beautiful. But jewellery designer Emma Franklin is something of a horse-whisperer when it comes to communicating the beauty of animals. From kissing goats to moody triceratops and roaring rams to silly geese, the Central Saint Martins graduate draws on a vast animal farm to make her humorous but striking jewellery.
Based in a light-filled studio in Clerkenwell, Franklin hand makes every piece of jewellery - often to clients peculiar specifications - using a brilliant mix of metals from rhodium, to silver and gold for her chunky chains and centrepiece cocktail rings. The prize animal heads come as cufflinks and pins, pendants and earrings – Franklin says best sellers are the tigers and the hippos. And we can see why – who wouldn’t want a chunky laughing hippo’s head around their neck? They’re utterly impossible to resist.
