I’m pretty certain that if they still existed I’d still be wearing them. Sigh. Anyway, if you’re a Dr Marten’s fan then now’s your chance to get a seriously grown-up pair that you really will wear forever.
A brand new bespoke service launched exclusively in Dover Street Market yesterday. That’s right – trip down to the basement of Mayfair store and you can have your feet measured up and take your pick from leathers (the metallic options were proving particularly popular yesterday), sole, stitching, heel loops and lining on offer. Your strict specifications will be dispatched up to the Cobbs Lane factory in Northamptonshire, et voila – around five weeks later your finished boots will be ready for your final fitting and the beginning of a beautiful, lifelong relationship. They’ll look like your average pair of DM boots or shoes but, you know, better. (Who knew such a thing was possible?) And they’ll arrive in a hardwood box complete with shoe trees.
As you might expect made to measure doesn’t come cheap, especially since the team have sourced the most luxe leathers for you to choose from. But we’re not talking Chanel couture prices here - the most basic boot starts from around £250, and numbers escalate the more expensive your tastes.
The window of opportunity to get in on the act is small. The pop-up will only exist in DSM for the next two weeks before it heads off to a selection of different locations across the globe. So unless you fancy a trip to Tokyo in the next few months (although, now you come to mention it…) you’d better hurry. But if you do miss the boat rumour has it that the service will be going online next year.
