Affectionately known by so many as the 'johnny pocket,' the little pocket that sits snugly inside your larger front jeans pocket is not actually designed for holding contraception.

Thanks to its tiny, square, relatively useless shape, it has prompted a lot of debate over the years as to what it could possibly be for.

The idea of having to fish out small change one fiddly coin at a time quickly ruled out that idea.

Other, not particularly inventive suggestions, across forums created for debating the subject, have focused on zippo lighters and breath mints.

It turns out, though, that the truth is far more interesting than all that.

The small front pocket was in fact designed, according to a post by Nitin Sachdev on Quora, for cowboys to carry their watches.

This is what Nitin's post says in full:

'It’s a watch pocket. Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcosts. To keep them from getting broken, Levi's introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch.'

Amazing.
