THE WAY YOU WEAR IT... THE BRETON TOP

By Leanne Bayley

You can thank Coco Chanel for first elevating the humble striped top to serious style status. In the 1930s she designed and wore a striped top with palazzo pants (a look she copied from French sailors) and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Breton top is now one of the few sartorial items that’s considered classic and chic, yet is still relatively cheap to buy. From the high street to army surplus stores, you can work this look for a tenner or less, so snap one up this summer and like these ELLE readers we spotted on the street, add interest with a statement necklace, or wear with a denim jacket -sleeves rolled of course.

Tres Bien as the French would say.
