Actors have been known to go to tremendous extremes in order to physically embody certain roles. Just look at the way Chris Hemsworth transformed his body for his role in his new movie.

Chris is starring in the new Ron Howard film In the Heart of the Sea, based on a true story that inspired Herman Melville's classic book  Moby Dick.  Hemsworth plays a sailor shipwrecked for almost three months after a whale hits his ship. For the role, he had to undergo a stunning transformation.

This is the Thor you're very familiar with, just for the sake of comparison (really, that's all it's for).

On Saturday, Chris shared a photo on Instagram and Twitter of what he looked like during filming for the grueling role.

'Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea"', Chris said, joking about his weight loss. 'Wouldn't recommend it.'
