To the top of the Rockerfeller Centre for our first show of NYFW, where a revolving stage of models took centre stage for the Kate Spade AW16 presentation.

While the brand looked to past female icons for inspiration – president and chief creative officer Deborah Lloyd name-checked Liza Minnelli, Billie Holiday and Marlene Dietrich – it touched on the zeitgeist too, nodding to fashion’s current sensibility for the androgynous by mixing that signature Kate Spade femininity with a more masculine mood. Think wide, cropped herringbone trousers paired with a pink houndstooth coat; a black trouser suit worn over a white shirt with a thick black bow tied at the neck; and power-flower-print blouses styled over thick black turtlenecks.

So with this gender-blending in mind, here are three quick styling hacks from the Kate Spade show you can adopt now and wear right through to next season:

1. Try a length of ribbon tied into a bow at the neck of a white shirt for a sharper take on this season’s pussybow blouse.

2. Attach a pair of flower corsages to brogues or patent leather slippers (or head straight to the new Kate Spade store on London’s Regent Street when it opens in April and pick up a pair).

3. Take one floaty mid-length dress and wear with a double-breasted masculine coat and flat shoes.

Clothes aside, there was a pretty damn good view of Manhattan to boot.
