With a new fashion season comes a whole new set of trends to contend with, from the totally wearable to the completely impractical. The latter tends to filter down to our Instagram feeds through bold, bright street style stars in trends, but this new season seems to be less about peacocking and more about trends with longevity. Think a twist on utility style, boots that can handle a downpour and the workwear staple you never thought would make a comeback.

From acid brights to the new way to wear denim, ELLE's Fashion Stylist Felicity Kay put this season's hottest trends on trial to show you how to wear six key street style looks.

LOOK 1: MICRO FLORALS

Micro florals for autumn might not be groundbreaking, but pairing a maxi dress with skinny jeans is a look that's about to take over the Fashion Week streets: "I think the dress-over-denim combo will be worn a lot during the shows" explains Felicity, using the jeans to tone down the acid-bright dress for day. Pair with simple slingbacks and a slouchy draw-string bag, then add a clashing element to the look with statement, structural earrings: "Mango do amazing earrings, especially over the last season. The ELLE team have been obsessing over them."

LOOK 2: DARK DENIM

Denim is set to take a darker turn for the shows, predicts Felicity: "We saw dark denim at Calvin Klein, so I think this show season we will see people in deeper washes as opposed to light denims. These snake print boots are my favourite part of this outfit, especially worn with loose denim or a dress over the top. I'm sure we'll see this vibrant hue of this jacquard top stick around for another season too."

LOOK 3: MODERN UTILITY

Taking on the anarchist mood of the moment, a minimalistic take on utility is an easy way to work this season's trends into your wardrobe. "This version of utility is less traditional; the hero product is a great pair of trousers. I love this grey pair because of the obi belt and pocket details." Stompy boots are a street style essential, again seen with an oversized version of the slouchy grab-bag. Add a beret and you're good to go – "they're bound to be everywhere this season".

LOOK 4: PROPORTION PLAY

An oversized utility coat worn with a mini cross-body bag, heavy boots and a miniskirt… this look is all about mixing measures. "Play more on proportions and layer long over short" advises Felicity, styling the executive check miniskirt with pared-back pieces that still protect against the great British weather. As for accessories, choose one standout print to take the look up a notch and finish with ring-pull boots.

LOOK 5: EXECUTIVE CHECKS

If there's one lesson to take from this season's street style, it's that "people should be buying blazers again. It's a very wearable item and is going to be a massive part of the season." Think grey 1990s check in oversized, masculine shapes, the kind your Dad might have had in his work wardrobe. "The check blazer is key, and the fraying is a modern update to this style" advises Felicity. "It's been done by everyone like Zimmerman, Balenciaga and subverted by Calvin Klein." The split style jeans aren't going anywhere, especially worn with masculine mules, a masculine spin on the kitten heels of seasons gone by.

LOOK 6: ACID BRIGHTS

"We saw a lot of lime in the resort collections, but this is a more autumnal take on that. It's also a good investment because this shade is going to prevail." Choose oversized, structured shapes and clash with more bold colour. As Felicity puts it, "Go big or go home – this is the look if you're feeling brave", styling the look with those 1970s inspired snake print boots.
