Mary-Kate and Ashley for Badminton Doubles? Keira Knightley to Bend it like... Giggs? With the Olympics taking over London, ELLE finds much amusement in qualifying previous cover stars on to the Olympic Dream Team.
Olympic Ceremony Performance – KylieEvery Olympic Games celebration begins with an unforgettable live show and for us, Kylie’s stunning performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games will always be one of our favourites. For our ultimate Olympic Dream Team, there could only be one performer - the Australian Princess of Pop..
Presenter – Alexa ChungAs if live sporting events weren’t exciting enough, a presenter can add more layers of suspense with keen observational commentary. With her sharp wit and charming sense of humour, we would ask Alexa Chung to preside over our Olympics coverage to make those thrilling sporting categories even more... thrilling (and the more boring ones more watchable)..
Team Captain – David BeckhamOf course no team would be complete without a captain and while he might not have made the cut for Team GB (what were they thinking!?) David Beckham is the only man who could take this spot for us. A phenomenally talented sportsman who exudes dignity and prowess, we would gladly follow him into the stadium to champion our team.
Fencing – MadonnaA chameleon of style – and abilities – Madonna could probably qualify for most sports on the ELLE fantasy Dream Team list. However she was perhaps her most intimidating when she appeared in the 2002 Bond film, Die Another Day as a strict fencing instructor. For the accompanying Bond Theme music video – which Madonna, naturally, performed herself – the Queen of Pop dared to *gasp* take on herself in a brutal fight scene. We’re sure there would be no more powerful opponent..
Taekwondo – Anne HathawayWith her performance in the recent Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway found herself fighting fit having undertaken martial arts classes for her role as Catwoman. Having appeared on the cover of ELLE back in 2010 in a gold Balmain dress, we suspect the actress would easily win the same colour medal for us in our Olympic Dream Team having expertly kicked ass in the movie..
Hockey – Emma WatsonShe might have proven she can wield a broomstick in the Harry Potter series, but in real life Emma Waston has shown she is even better equipped with a hockey stick having played for the teams at USA’s Brown university. With her field skills and cool mind, we’d love to have Emma represent on the pitch as part of our Dream Team..
Basketball – Gwen StefaniGwen might have played a cheerleader in her music video for ‘Hollaback Girl’ but we would be B.A.N.A.N.A.S not to include her in the ELLE Olympic Dream Team. Whilst American Football isn’t an Olympic sport, one of the USA’s other major sports is – basketball. With her nimble footedness in her solo and No Doubt based music videos, we think Gwen would be a great basketball player to swiftly run between the other players and score some hoops. For this, she scored a place on the ELLE Olympic Dream Team..
Beach Volleyball – Gwyneth Paltrow If there is anyone that looks good on a beach, it’s Gwyneth. Leading an incredibly healthy lifestyle and always keeping in shape, we would volunteer Gwyneth for the ELLE Olympics for the Beach Volleyball category as we’re sure she would be up for the challenge – and we know how great she looks in a bikini..
Football – Keira KnightleyShe is one of the most glamorous actresses in the world – but we could never forget Keira Knightley’s tomboyish appearance in the 2002 film, Bend It Like Beckham. Showing some mean skills with a football, the ELLE cover star would bring A-list glamour to the pitch as part of the Olympic Dream Team..
Equestrian – Kristen StewartShe made riding a horse look so easy in Snow White & The Huntsman earlier this year that you wouldn’t even know she felt uneasy about getting on a saddle. Proving her brilliant acting might be her downfall when it comes to our Dream Team selection, we feel she is the perfect choice for the Equestrian challenges in our fantasy Olympics..
Judo – Cameron DiazShe may be best know for her carefree comic roles, but in Charlie’s Angels Cameron Diaz proved she can throw down in a fight scene. Not only would we like her on our team to take part in this sport, but we also think she’d be a lot of fun for when it comes to celebrating our gold medal haul (the ELLE Olympic Dream Team would all be gold winners, obviously – so maximum celebrations)..
Rhythmic Gymnastics – Lady GagaLady Gaga time and time again demonstrates an ability to tackle daring dance routines during her epic music videos – be it in a burger joint like in ‘Telephone’ or a conventional dance studio in ‘Marry The Night’ – and we think the unstoppable singer would relish the challenge of showing off some rhythmic gymnastic moves. She can certainly strike some impressive poses on a shoot – she makes the ELLE Olympic Dream Team..
Archery – Liv TylerIn the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the elves proved themselves as expert archers. And whilst Liv Tyler might not have lifted a bow herself in the epic film series – despite being an elven princess – we would be confident on her channelling her inner Arwen in the Olympic stadium to score a bull’s-eye in archery..
Diving – Cheryl ColeMs Cole expertly demonstrated she has no problem diving from a great height back in May when she performed a swan dive on the stage of The Voice. Whilst the dive saw her land into a sea of hunky dancers for her performance of ‘Call My Name’, we’re sure Cheryl would be just as talented diving into water..
Badminton doubles – Mary-Kate and Ashley OlsenThe Olsen twins have been proving the age-old adage “two heads are better than one” since they were old enough to walk, having built an empire through their television, modelling and fashion line ventures. Such astute thinking could only lead to success when it comes to a doubled sporting event. The intuitive minds of the two creative thinkers would be sure to see them taking gold on the badminton court – and so they, of course, win a place on the ELLE Olympic Dream Team..
Gymnastics – Natalie PortmanIt takes a great amount of physical strength – and an even greater level of grace to be a ballerina, and Natalie Portman aced it in her Oscar Winning performance for Black Swan. Gymnastics would be just as gruelling, but we think the adept actress could be as successful in this sporting category. Plus she also proved she has no problem wearing a leotard....
Swimming – Pamela AndersonHaving shot to fame through TV show Baywatch – and helped a little by that red swimsuit – it is a no-brainer that only Pamela Anderson could represent the ELLE Olympic Dream Team in the swimming category. Having grown into a fashion icon in recent years, Pammy would be a welcome addition to the Olympic Dream Team..
100 Metres – Rosie Huntington-WhiteleyOur September cover star certainly proved she had the acting chops to go with those model cheeks when she starred in last year’s Tranformers: Dark of the Moon. And if you are going to star in a film that sees the world invaded by killer robots, you’ve got to be able to outrun them. The 100 metre sprint is one of the most adrenalin-driven sports in the Olympics so we would enlist Rosie for this high-speed sport..
