As the new season approaches and the recession sets in, die-hard fashion fans are becoming increasingly inventive to raise the funds needed to keep their wardrobes one step ahead and buy what they want this autumn. The wiliest are finding new ways to trade old designer and high street buys for the new season key pieces by selling their well-loved but now unwanted clothes. Here they share their tried and tested tips and tell us what they have sold, how they sold it and how much they've made. Plus, the new autumn/winter pieces they'll be investing in.
Sarah Whitely: 'I'm ashamed to say I had clothes in my wardrobe with the tags still on', admits Sarah, 34 from East London. She takes unwanted buys to Sublime in Victoria Park, London where below the ground floor (which sells new designer clothes and gifts) you'll find an Aladdin's Cave where locals can buy and sell last season designer and high street clothes. The shop's owner takes 50% of the sale price, but the process is easy and effortless.'The racks are filled with brand new and barely worn high street and designer pieces that people want to sell' says Sarah. This year she has sold a statement designer handbag ('I just don't feel right using it anymore'), and lots of never worn mid-brand and high-street pieces, as well as two pairs of designer sunglasses. So far she has netted £500 for her new season fashion fund and will be buying these 6 key pieces. Black wool dress, £135, by Whistles (0870 770 4301)

Layla Good:
Layla, 25 from Oxford is an Ebay Queen. Not only has she amassed a small fortune selling the designer shoes that have been languishing in the bottom of her wardrobe unworn, she also spots key vintage and designer pieces on Ebay that she buys and then resells at a profit. Her big tip is visit Ebay.fr (that's French Ebay) where designer labels usually sell for less than they would in the UK. 'Last month I bought a piece of Balmain with the tags still on for 100 Euros on French Ebay. I sold it a few days later on Ebay in the UK for £300. That £200 profit plus, what she's raised erasing the evidence of her past shoe addiction means she can now afford her winter 2009 wish list, pictured here.
