Eddie Borgo, one of our favourite New York-based jewellery designers, has turned his creative vision and expertise in metal craftsmanship to handbags - and we're obsessed.

His debut handbag collection is inspired the minimal yet futuristic automotive stylings of Fifties and Sixties chrome culture, a time when America was prospering and the Space Race was at its zenith. He also interpreted the 'pocketbook' and 'attaché' silhouettes of the era to inform his modern shapes and constructions.

These are super-chic minimal designs for gals with grown-up tastes, all made in gloriously fine Italian leatherwork, with rubber coated or latex finishes and Eddie Borgo’s innovative touch evident in the sleek aluminium hardware.

The shapes range from the Colt cross body (£2,030), the Colt satchel (2,600) and the Dean doctor bag (£2,360), to the Vic minaudiere (£1,790) and the Boyd clutch (£810). The refined palette was inspired by automobile paint from the Fifties and Sixties, and features shades of jet black, evergreen, frost grey and blush pink, while each handbag includes a discreet mirrored compact – just the thing for the kind of busy, professional women Mr Borgo had in mind when designing the collection.

The bags will be available exclusively at Harvey Nichols from September 1.
