The weather has been terrible: grey, pouring rain and cold. And most of the show-goers here in Milan have been dressed in the industry’s team colours: navy and black. This made the explosion of crayon-bright prints,  embellishments and overall maximalism on show during day 5 of Milan Fashion Week stand out all the more.

As the winters grow more extreme with each year, designers would be smart to experiment more with bold brights, pastels and flourishes — usually the stuff of spring/summer — for the colder months as we saw today.

Mind you, each designer is motivated and inspired by something different.

At Marni, Creative Director Consuelo Castiglioni set out to play with 'perceptions and proportions' by using cropped layers over long and blown-out bell sleeves to add dimension and quirk to her kaleidoscopic colours.

And Salvatore Ferragamo Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti looked to 'express an unabashed feeling of joy' with his line-up of stellar buttoned, pleated and zippered dresses, while Angela Missoni focused on a mood of 'artistic flair'.

All different motivations, but the main takeaway is the same: bright, bold colour. Think of it as the cheery, optimistic counterpoint to the moody goth-punk girl, in head-to-toe black, who stomped her way through most of New York and London.
