Age has forever been an issue in fashion; an industry that is looked to (and often criticised for) setting the beauty standards. Soon after a 14-year-old Kate Moss was scouted in an airport by Sarah Doukas, this teen image soon became fashion’s main, if only, representation of women.
Needless to say the internet went crazy last year when ‘old-age’ had it’s fashion moment, with top brands choosing women over 70 to represent them in their campaigns; Joni Mitchell starred in Saint Laurent’s SS15 campaign and Celine chose writer Joan Didion to front theirs. So with both extremes of age fashionably celebrated, where did this leave everyone in the middle?
Good news! Not only are the clothes from the 90s making a come-back but with the clothes come the models; two decades older, wiser and the majority now mums. Middle-age is the age of the moment.
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Peter Lindbergh’s The Reunion film, as we see Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigová, Karen Alexander, Nadja Auermann and Tatjana Patitz once again in front of Lindbergh’s lens (read more here.) But this isn’t the first time this year that the big faces of the 90s have stolen the limelight, as we saw Erin O’Connor triumph the teenage competition to open FW15 Marc Jacobs show and walk the Giles show.
These aren’t the only designers casting women over 30 instead of young girls. Proenza Schouler cast modeling icons Liisa Winkler and Liya Kebede for their AW15 catwalk, who both also star alongside Karolin Wolter and Anne Catherine Lacroix in the brand’s campaign this season.
Other brands, such as Givenchy, have also been tapping into the middle-age movement with Julia Roberts the face of their SS15
