From lampshading with oversized hoodies to getting our heels out in backless loafers and giving the cold shoulder, these are the trends we bought into in 2016, according to Lyst...

Straight-leg jeans

Though skinny jeans continues to outsell any other denim style 2 to 1 globally, the most-searched jeans by UK shoppers in 2016 were straight-leg styles., with Levi's iconic 501 becoming the most-viewed product on Lyst.com.

Remember the 'lampshading' trend we wrote about earlier this year? It was sparked by our new-found love of oversized hoodies, and the silhouette created by thigh-high boots when paired with them.

The oversized hoodie was, of course, brought to our attention by Parisian collective Vetements - we wrote about it here - and we went wild for it. Lyst saw a 48% increase in sales of luxury hoodies in 2016, and the average UK order value for a hoodie has increased from £35 to £85 in 12 months. the most-viewed product was Vetements' 'Total Darkness' hoodie, priced at an eye-watering £762.

Throwback logos

We love a logo, apparently. Sales of logoed sportswear increased 64% year on year, with notable comebacks from 00's favourites Calvin Klein (the most-viewed logo-piece on Lyst), Tommy Jeans, Reebok, Champion and Ellesse. You might want to cover your eyes for the next fact: in May, Lyst even saw a spike in searches for Von Dutch trucker caps. Say it isn't so.

Want to know which shoe captured the zeitgeist in 2016? Look no further than Gucci's furry backless 'Princetown' loafer.

Fact time: for every pair of Gucci Princetown backless loafers that came on Lyst in April this year, 180 people tried to buy them. Six months later, the metallic Gucci styles were UK sell-outs too.

The high street took note and 2016 saw 4,000 more pairs of backless loafers and mules for sale online than in 2015.

Bomber jackets

A bomber jacket was sold every 3 minutes in May. Seriously. We were loving the style more than our failsafe biker jackets. Satin styles with embellishment or embroidered detailing were particularly popular, at all price points.

During London Fashion Week, an incredible 75,000 people searched for J.W.Anderson's 'Pierce' bag on Lyst, making it the most-wanted bag of 2016. Other popular it bags this year were the Gucci 'Dionysus', Loewe 'Puzzle', Simon Miller 'Bonsai' and the Balenciaga 'Bazar' shoppers.

We were kind of obsessed with lace-up detailing this year; searches for 'lace-up' are up 110% year on year.

Metallic skirts, shoes and bags hit peak popularity in August, with silver just overtaking gold as the most popular metallic fashion shade of 2016. Gucci's silver skirt (£1,850) was the most-viewed product.

Chokers

Chokers really did replace flower crowns as the festival season accessory of the year. We saw them on everyone from Kendall Jenner to our favourite street style ladies. Sales increased 120% this year, hitting peak popularity in July.

Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses

This year's erogenous zone was the shoulders. In June, Lyst saw 3,000 searches an hour for the off-the-shoulder tops, called the 'bardot' style after Brigitte Bardot. New designers Magda Butruym and Johanna Ortiz enjoyed a surge in web traffic, but it was Zara where most of us ended up buying them.

90s swimsuits

Taylor Swift's 4th July party didn't just provide us with 2016's most-cringe moment - then-squeeze Tom Hiddleston in a 'I Heart T.S.' tee), it also made 90s-style swimsuits big news. When Taylor and Gigi donned red, white and blue striped numbers by Solid & Striped, the brand enjoyed a 365% increase in searches. We also went crazy for red Baywatch-esque numbers.

Pink

We were all thinking pink this year. Though black, blue, grey and white were still the top-four most popular colours (as always), pink was the fifth on the list with approximately 810% more page views for pink products than last year.

Pink knitwear in particular saw a huge spike this Autumn, across both high street and high end brands, with the most-viewed product being Acne's 'Dwyn' sweater.

We collected all our favourite head-to-toe pink looks here.

Velvet

We noticed that everyone was wearing velvet back in September - and we can expect to see a lot more. UK sales of velvet clothes and accessories increased by 45% from August to December. Velvet boots were trending in October, and in November velvet overtook lace as the most searched-for winter party dress look in London. Attico's 'Anjelica' velvet dress was the most-viewed velvet item.

Skate shoes

Furthering our years-long love of trainers, this year we took comfy-shoe solace in skate shoes, in particular Vans' Old Skool style in black and white (seen on our street style crush Jan-Michael Quammie in September). Lyst currently sees more than 18,000 searches a day for the monochrome skate shoe. Wowzers.

Puffer jackets

This winter is all about the puffer, thanks to Balenciaga, which slated the trend for AW16 back in February.

Lyst users went wild for Raf Simon's £1,700 oversized puffer sold out globally in 2 weeks after being worn by Rihanna, and a dark green Urban Outfitters puffer became the star of its own viral Instagram page. Unsurprisingly, Balenciaga's swing puffer (£1915) was the most-viewed product.
