Sarah Jessica Parker almost didn't slip into those iconic Manolos as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City. In fact, she tried her best to get out of it, according to a new interview.
Actor Seth Rudetsky talked to Parker for his Playbill column while the two were performing in Provincetown, Massachusetts, along with Matthew Broderick. Parker got her start on Broadway, and then became a household name in the 1980s sitcom Square Pegs. So when it came to another television show, Parker wanted to run far away.
Apparently, Parker was originally unsure about filming the pilot for Sex and the City because she didn't want to be tied down to a TV series. But she liked the script, filmed the pilot, and promptly forgot it existed until the show got picked up by HBO. According to Rudensky:
'Months later she found out the show was picked up and she completely wanted to get out of it. I mean, completely. She really didn't want to be tied down to one job because she loved going from gig to gig and being, what she called, a 'journeyman.' She tried various ways to get out of it including telling HBO that she would film three projects for free if they'd release her from her contract!'
Of course, that didn't happen, and that's a good thing. She now looks back fondly on the show, and naturally doesn't regret taking the part. She also hinted at a new project with theSex and the City costars, but we've heard that one for a while now. Here's hoping we haven't seen the last of Carrie.
