Fashion has always celebrated individuality. But this season, its adoration of all things unique and unabashedly unconventional has reached a new level.

What does it mean to be a 'lady' in 2016? How does she dress and live?

Those questions have been in the air this year with the rise of trans women in fashion and pop culture as well as the subversive takes on ladylike dressing that were inescapable on the spring/summer 2016 catwalks.

This season is filled with wildly fun, boldy individual takes on femininity, from Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele's fantastically out-there retro muse, replete with clashing colours and flamboyant Seventies references, to Miuccia Prada's quintessentially eclectic woman, decked out in bright stripes and Christmas bauble-sized earrings.

Femininity has always worked best when it's served with camp and irony.

So on a scale of Margot Tenenbaum to Iris Apfel, how skewed are you?

The New Skewed

Young meets old, geeky meets cool. A checked shirt over a plaid tweed trouser suit with wide legs? Why not? This daring look is about an anything goes attitude in the spirit of skewed fashion's most popular poster girls: Leandra 'Man Repeller' Medine and Susie Bubble. Mix and match it up, then mix it up a little more.

Wool jacket, £345, and matching trousers, £220, both By Malene Birger. Wool top, £215, Bimba Y Lola. Wool skirt, £210, Heohwan Simulation. Leather shoes, £375, Loriblu. Plastic necklace, £20, Freedom at Topshop. Embroidered leather bag (left), £114, Suncoo. Leather bag (right), £270, Longchamp

The Strategist

Slick and coordinated with a pinch of crazy is the name of the game. It's all about clean and classic seperates - a minimalist leather tunic here, a white pencil skirt there - and letting the accessories and outerwear speak the loudest, allowing you to easily increase the degrees of skewed, depending on the occasion. It's a pragmatic approach that will take you from a morning breakfast meeting to an evening out with your friends.

Rubber and metal jacket, £225, Hunter. Leather dress, £575, By Malene Birger. Wool jumper (underneath), £215, and cotton skirt, £185, Bimba Y Lola. Suede and rubber sandals, £195, Kurt Geiger. Vinyl bag, £525, Sophie Hulme

Lady Molto

For the love of Iris Apfel, pile it on, girl. Or as Marc Jacobs infamously demanded of his party goers: 'No matt surfaces, no natural looks.' More is better. That means prints, colours, textures, layers, volume, all of it - and preferably all at once.

Cotton coat, £603, DVF. Wool-mix dress, £38, River Island. Lurex top (underneath), £24.99, H&M. Silk shirt, £325, Rejina Pyo. Wool trousers, £190, Mauro Grifoni. Leather sandals, £495, Holly Fulton. Feather bag, £325, Topshop Unique

Madame Colourbullet

You take a relatively foolproof idea like, say, a tailored trouser suit, and subvert it by choosing a dubsmash of contrasting shades, gloriously flying in the face of every colour wheel that ever was. Fill your Pinterest board with backstage images from SS16 Maison Margiela and Dries van Noten and channel the spirit of Ab Fab's Eddie Monsoon.

Silk jacket, £310, and matching trousers, £145, both Zadig & Voltaire. Silk bomber (underneath), £59, Marks & Spencer. Wool-mix top (under bomber), £155, Sandro. Leather trainers, £80, Nike at Office. Wicker hat, £70, Kate Spade New York. Sequined polyester scarf, £8, and polyester corsage, £8, both Asos

Ms Throwback

Is it Seventies glam? Sixties sci-fi? Or prim Victoriana? The answer is all of the above. As shown by Fendi, Louis Vuitton and a slew of others, the fashion world doesn't stick to one decade. So why would you?
