If you aren't aquainted with knitted leggings yet, you possibly should be. Here's a list of key styling hacks, spotted at New York Fashion Week, to start mastering ahead of the AW16 season:

Coach: Sportswear Meets Metallics

Elevate sportswear classics, such as a Varsity jacket, with an embellished evening shoe. Here, a preppy two-piece has been subverted with a retro-looking metallic court, but you could do the same with a bomber-and-jeans combo, finished off with a glittery party flat.

Proenza Schouler: Top To Bottom

This is all about a triangular silhouette: think fitted on top and loose on the bottom. A pair of wide trousers paired with a jacket nipped in at the waist works particularly well. Add in some utilitarian lacing, as seen here, for bonus style points.

Rodarte: Lace Layers

In this case more is definitely more. Choose two to three different types of lace in complementing colours and layer them all together. Start with a pair of lace tights, add a sheer skirt or dress and, if you can find one, finish with a lace-detail jacket.

3.1 Philip Lim: Sock it to them

Lim has given us permission to bring back that old sock and sandal combination. This time, chunky flat sandals were paired with embellished chenille socks for a sporty-but-polished look, a great transeasonal way of dressing.

DKNY: Subverted Eveningwear

This is all about taking classic eveningwear – a pinstripe blazer, satin tailoring, a lace shirt – and slicing through it with tough boots and a boyish silhouette. Choose a top that is cut cropped and wide to reveal a flash of midriff.

Altuzarra: Switch-up Your Belt

Take your cue from the Altuzarra girl and wrap a length of fabric around your waist in place of a belt.

Style it over dresses, blazers or a chunky cardigan and secure it with a vintage brooch.

Victoria Beckham: Luxe Legs

Add an extra layer to your winter wardrobe with a pair of ribbed knitted leggings. VB’s new girl wore hers underneath skirts and dresses and with pointed flats.

Note: a flash of ankle is key.

Derek Lam: Dressed-down Partywear

Transform eveningwear into casual daywear by layering a chunky poloneck underneath a luxe party dress. Finish it off with a pair of heavy-duty flat boots.

That’s what you call bang for your buck.

Suno: Supersize Your Sleeves

Remember those jumbo sleeves you loved so much last season? They aren’t going anywhere. For an update try layering a short-sleeved jumper over extra-long or frilled shirt sleeves.

Moncler Grenoble: Ménage A Trois

Start by wrapping a vintage silk scarf up and around your head, tying in a bow beneath your chin. Next up comes a baseball cap (stay with us).

Top it all off with a beanie.

We’re calling it city-ski-chic.

Lacoste: Poloneck Update

The humble poloneck gets an athletic overhaul for AW16 and now comes finished with a ringpull zip.

Layer one underneath a blazer or Crombie coat to elevate it from sportswear to stylish citywear.

J.Crew: Print Clash

We can always rely on J.Crew for a kooky print clash.

Take your cue from this look and mix summer florals with animal prints.

You could even throw in a stripe too.

We’re saying anything goes.
