Something strange happens on summer holidays.

Our day-to-day look could be clean, Céline-like minimalism - but hop on a plane to Marrakech and suddenly we're wearing floaty dresses and raffia, like a true Isabel Marant woman.

Maybe we're into all things embellished, bright and Gucci-inspired in winter - yet come August, our wardrobe is reduced to nautical stripes as we take cues from Tommy Hilfiger and Max Mara.

What is it about the sun, sand and surf that turns us into completely different versions or ourselves?

With the new season offering a look for every kind of vacationer, your inner globetrotter will have no shortage of choice.

40 Dresses You'll Want To Live In This Summer

You might be allergic to brights at work, but your inner club kid can't resist them in Ibiza. Don't fight the pull of a sheer, glittery bomber jacket in crayon colours - just enjoy the moment. Follow Chloé's lead and bring your look back down to Earth by mixing in sportier pieces, perhaps with a pair of tracksuit bottoms.

Rayon jacket (worn around waist), £1,210, Ashish. Cotton-mix top, £20, Next. Denim jeans, £500, Marques' Almeida. Leather sandals, £55, Clarks. Denim hat, £7.99, New Look

Like your holidays romantic and your summer wardrobe ultra feminine? Then the season is yours for the taking, with stores stocked with frills, ruffles and girly detailing. Grab an off-the-shoulder dress and take a styling cue from Miu Miu, skipping the gladiators and going for a ballet slipper flat with a grosgrain ribbon instead. When it comes to your swimsuits, the more retro and whimsical the better. Giant straw bags are a must.

Cotton dress, £650, Rebecca Taylor. Leather shoes, £89, Kurt Geiger. Straw hat, £12.99, New Look. Metal sunglasses, £231, Dolce & Gabbana. Small raffia bag, £225, L.K. Bennett at Very Exclusive. Large straw 'La Plage' bag, £89, Plümo. Ribbon (tied around hat), stylist's own

Gymophobe in the city, sporty by the sea. That volleyball game in the sand demands high-performance threads that'll look just as good over a poolside lunch afterwards. A Calvin Klein bikini and a bold trainer will do nicely.

Cotton-mix coat, £260, Hunter. Cotton dress, £875, Fyodor Golan. Leather sandals, £42, Topshop. Metal sunglasses, £360, Dior. Metal water bottle, £35, Swell. Leather bag (with belt), £1,695, Jimmy Choo

Your beach doppelganger is a sucker for all things raffia, ikat, and vaguely worldy. You're in Marrakech, and want to look the part, OK? Just avoid the clichés and go for more subtle iterations of the world traveller sartorial signifers you hold dear. Wear everything with a pair of babouche slippers, the backless North African shoe that's summer's must-have footwear - Céline, Acne and Zara have created some of the best.

Polyester-mix jacket, £149, Marc Cain. Cotton top, £155, and matching shorts, £135, both Sandro. Leather shoes, £39.99, Zara. Straw hat, £18, and plastic sunglasses, £14, both River Island. Cotton bag, £39, ba&sh. Leather belt, £125, Paul Smith.
