14 Totally Extra Couture Runway Looks We Want To See At The Met Gala 2019

OTT is in.

Whoever first said 'Less is more' clearly hadn't seen Viktor & Rolf's Internet-breaking couture collection. Chock full of pastel-toned tulle gowns that make Rihanna's infamous pink Grammys dress look low-key, the meme-worthy dresses marked a shift in tone for 2019's take on fashion. Namely, a more lighthearted one.

Making the most of the current Insta obsession with all things flouncy, feathery and fun before the fashion world's inevitable fickle return to minimal, monochrome and muted, is this year's Met Gala theme: 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay 'Notes on Camp', expect RuPaul levels of extra realness from this year's red carpet. Or as Sontag put it, 'The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.' Fabulous, darling.

In anticipation of next week's rainbow-hued event, we rounded up the most OTT couture runway looks we'd like to see storming the Met Gala red carpet (and the celebs we want to see working them). Let the music play!

1

Viktor & Rolf's 'Less Is More' Tulle Confection

LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: We're pretty sure the only person that could pull off (or move in) a dress this big is the queen of multiple seat-occupying gowns, Rihanna. Frankly, this ginormous Viktor & Rolf confection makes her Grammys dress look miniature. Whoever said less is more...?

2

Celia Kritharioti's Anti-Gravity Balloon Veil

Celeb we want to see working it: Sweeping pastel pink swathes of fabric? Check. An anti-gravity floating veil held up by balloons? Check. The most Lady Gaga-appropriate ensemble ever? Triple check.

3

Celia Kritharioti's Sequin Scarf Dress

LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: With a bod like Zoe Kravitz's, even over the top camp-theme outfits look better with less fabric. We can see the teeny tiny actress in this nineties supermodel-style scarf dress so clearly, it's as if the first Monday in May is already here.

Givenchy's Shredded Rainbow

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
Isidore Montag

Celeb we want to see working it: Rainbow and tassels and collars oh my! Givenchy's car-wash-but-make-it-fashun look goes to the one and only Solange.

5

Alexandre Vauthier's Flouncy Tux

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Star of Eighth Grade and actress Elsie Fisher, who's swiftly becoming our red carpet inspo for super cool suits. She might be small but we can see this larger than life androgynous take on the classic le smoking all over Elsie.

6

Armani Privé's Tasselled Clown

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Serving up retro clown realness, we can see Diane Kruger rocking that hat, ruff and tasselled over-the-elbow gloves without batting an eyelid.

Schiaparelli's Feathered Orb

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Never one to falter in the face of a Met Gala theme (her Joan Of Arc-inspired look from last year was epic), Zendaya is the only woman we can think of to work this armless feather orb. Let's just hope she's not bothered about taking selfies...

8

Schiaparelli's Star-Print Gown

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: With her recent return to all things pastel, pretty and pop-tastic, we're pegging Taylor Swift as the wearer of this delightfully child-like star-print gown. Ideal accessories would be pastel pink hair and a live kitten.

9

Valentino's Pink Satin Peek-A-Boo

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: To work a bubblegum pink ruffled satin dress with just a peek-a-boo window for your face, well, you need to have one hell of a face. Sarah Paulson - this one's for you. A master of wearing an outrageous look, rather than have it wear you, Paulson can pull anything off. And just think how much time she'll save on her hair!

Elie Saab's Floral Feather Mini

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: With legs up to here and cheekbones to rival a teenage Kate Moss, actress of the moment Sophie Turner would give this floral feather mini an injection of sarcastic sex appeal. Forget 'winter is coming', spring is already here.

11

Balmain's One Big Bow

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Who better to embody the joy of camp than our fave member of the fab five, Jonathan Van Ness. We're feeling major gift wrapping meets retro 80s cummerbund realness with this candyfloss coloured Balmain look. Those glasses with that moustache? Shutup already!

12

Chanel's Dangerous Liaisons But Make It Modern

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: As much as we love Kaia in this Dangerous Liaisons takes on 2019 look, we're allocating this feathered fancy to Chanel darling Yara Shahidi. Just add a natural texture bouffant a la Marie Antoinette and some tactical sideways walking through doors.

Ulyana Sergeenko's Fairytale Milkmaid

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Candy land tulle and feathers aren't for everyone, whatever the dress code might dictate, so we're allocating this more muted take on the OTT theme to fairytale queen Emilia Clarke. Part wanton milkmaid, part domineering mistress of the house, we're feeling the drama of this Ulyana Sergeenko gown.

14

Dior's Mystical Pierrot

SS19 Couture Met Gala 2019
LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Celeb we want to see working it: Once you've worn a Valentino swimming cap on the red carpet you've officially exhausted every fashion risk there is. Which is why we're putting Amber Heard in this edgy Dior astrology-meets-emo-clown ensemble. If anyone can pull off a pantaloon jumpsuit, tulle ruff and a golden netted cap and still look badass, it's Amber.
