There has been much talk this season of the return of the trouser, and while it is undoubtedly an essential component of every fashion fans autumn wardrobe, the role of the skirt should not be overlooked. And not just any skirt either. This season hemlines have dropped and the must-have pieces are full bodied and hitting mid-calf. This may seem a tricky style to carry off at first glance, its actually a piece of cake. Opt for a flowing silk or satin number and team with a rock tee and leather jacket for a contemporary look; or take your tips from D&G and head for heavier denim or wool and sport with the ubiquitous checked shirt and tan boots for a decidedly more retro feel. Either way, judging by the spring catwalks so far, this is a length that is here to stay so embrace it now with the ELLE teams edit of their favourite high-street and designer pieces and get a head start on spring.
