We should’ve seen it coming, with Spring/Summer ‘19’s new Bohemia (just don’t call it Boho chic; it was trippier, made for today, with Paisley print skirts mixed with raffia belts and tie dye t-shirts at Paco Rabanne and Chloé), we ushered in an updated take on that '70s (fashion) show.
And designers have done the same thing for Spring/Summer 2020, taking fringe out of 2006 festival territory, mixing it with slick leather trenches, putting it on necklaces and cuffs and making it brighter (in the case of Issey Miyake). Or 100 yards long (in the case of Jil Sander and JW Anderson).
Of course, there was the OG 1970s take per Celine, but for Spring next year, the mandate is clearly 'fringe, but make it look expensive.' The sort of accessory that would look as much in place on the street style set, as it would in the waiting room at Coutts.
The entry point to this trend is - unsurprisingly - through bags. From ring-pull top handle bags with jelly-fish like tassels at LOEWE and Paco Rabanne, through to macrame versions at Off-White, fringe bags are certainly back. The high fashion take though? Playing with proportions. Go long or go home, essentially.

But fringe skirts, jackets and dresses are your next level up. Whether it's swathes of leather fringe running across the lapels, or fine fringe trimming the entire hem of a skirt, be sure to match your sass with your style, for fringe deserves a walk of purpose and movement.
So let that be the way to do it for 2020: go light, go leather, go long.
