Tanya Ling

Fashion illustration by Tanya Ling

Fashion illustrators are often the unsung heroes of the fashion world, their beautiful creations littering magazines and ad campaigns alike but without any public recognition. Tanya Ling, however, is a name that is tripping off the most fashionable tongues more frequently this season. Why? She has just collaborated with Marc Jacobs to produce the prints for the 2009 Cruise collection for Louis Vuitton.

Born in Calcutta and raised in Africa, America and England, London-based Tanya studied Fashion Design and Textiles at Central Saint Martins and started her career as a designer before turning her hand to illustration. Her first exhibition, held in Gavin Turk’s studio, brought her to the attention of the fashion world and it wasn’t long before the offers of work started pouring in. Since then she has teamed up with Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Jil Sander, Harrods, Diane von Furstenberg and Loewe as well as producing a handful of fashion-meets-art clothing collections of her own. She’s been busy.

Currently she’s hitting headlines with her work for Louis Vuitton. It’s not the first time that she’s teamed up with the luxury brand – she produced the illustrations for its second jewellery collection back in 2003. This time around she’s re-interpreted the nautical theme with elegant watercolour stripes painted in pastel shades onto chic silk dresses, shorts and jackets. Add us to the waiting list now please.

Her work can currently be seen alongside other illustrators in the current exhibition at the Fashion Illustration Gallery.
