Gaytten's last resort for Dior
Resort collections are about transitions. Bill Gaytten’s final collection for Dior was no exception. The 2013 pre-spring/summer collection was shown by appointment only yesterday in Paris. Gaytten's collections for Dior have not been filled with the whimsy and fantastical theatrics that was a trademark of his predecessor. These nuances made Galliano a luminary, but Gaytten’s focus on refinement and impeccable ready-to-wear helped the French label weather Galliano’s stormy departure. This collection focused on the waist, with belted dresses, trim jackets, and, of course, the return of peplum. These pieces were paired with tea-length, chiffon skirts, cropped trousers and voluminous minis.
Gaytten has been the acting creative director of the fashion house since John Galliano was dismissed in February 2011. Though Dior has not confirmed Gaytten’s employment, British Vogue reports that he has already left the brand. He will remain the creative director of John Galliano, a title he has held since Galliano himself was dismissed last year. What Gaytten has done is left a legacy of simple elegance. By adhering to exquisite ladylike silhouettes sans adornment, Gaytten has managed to cleanse the palette of the Dior buyer for Raf Simons, Dior’s new creative director, who will make his debut next month at the couture shows.
