Last night, we settled down with cocktails at Soho's cosy Basement Sate for our most recent #ELLEBookClub event, where ELLE Editor-in-Chief Lorraine Candy was in conversation with Great British Bake Off former contender and ELLE columnist Ruby Tandoh.

What ensued? A night of espresso martinis, Baileys-based canapés and a discussion of Ruby's new cookbook, Crumb - as well as Ruby revealing some behind-the-scenes action of what really goes down at The Great British Bake Off.

In the crowd were also a few familiar faces from the current season: Iain Watters and Chetna Makan, and with this season drawing to a close tonight, we look at our favourite GBBO revelations from last night.

What happens to all the leftover food on GBBO?

All the cakes, pastries, trifles (yes, we all remember Custardgate). It's a question we've all pondered (mostly because we'd all like to be at the receiving end), but Ruby revealed last night that it's in fact our favourite presenters Mel & Sue who take it upon themselves to devour the food once the cameras stop rolling. Just as we thought.

Ruby's favourite part of the show?

Surprisingly, Ruby revealed that it's not the high-paced action of the kitchen but rather the periods of downtime with the other contenders that she most enjoyed. In her own words: 'eating together and napping'.

What's Mary Berry like?

Ruby revealed that Mary Berry 'is exactly as you'd expect her to be' and 'smells great'. Wonderful.

What does Ruby think of this season's bakers?

Ruby commended quarter-finalist Martha Collins, who is also GBBO's youngest-ever baker at 17 years old. Ruby explained that, as she herself was only 21 at the time, she understands the pressures of being in the public eye at a young age; further adding that respect was due to 'anyone who can handle themselves around Paul Hollywood'. Agreed.

Who will win this season of GBBO?

This snippet of information came from one of this year's bakers: Iain. And drumroll please… Okay, there's no grand reveal. Iain simply revealed that we would never guess who wins this series. But we guess we'll find out tonight.
