Michael Phelps has just won his 21st Gold Medal (he has 25 overall), bringing him to a tie of most Gold's won ever with the late, great Leonidas of Rhodes, but a few thousand years ago (2,168 to be precise).

But Ryan Lochte reckons he's just as good as Phelps, his US Swimming Teammate.

After a journo asked Lochte whether he was glad to live in the era of Phelps, he modestly replied, 'Yes and no.

I guess you could say that, Ryan, like you could say Kelly Rowland would be the best Destiny's Child member if Beyoncé was never born.

Or Wagner would have won the 7th series X Factor if someone had killed off Rebecca Ferguson, Mary Byrne, Matt Cardle, Cher Lloyd and One Direction.

But that's kind of not how it works is it Ryan?

In the immortal words of Kirsten Dunst's character Torrance Shipman from perhaps the most important Sporting film of our time Bring It On, 'I define being the best as competing against the best there is out there and beating them.'
