The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were welcomed to Kelowna, British Columbia on the fourth day of their visit to Canada on Tuesday, but not everything went according to plan.

The royal couple, who were invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the University of British Columbia, were snubbed by a senior leader in the community, The Telegraph reports.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, the for the Okanagan Nation Alliance, was expected to join the duke and duchess on stage, but he pulled out at the last-minute. It followed another no-show the day before, when he was due to attend a reconciliation ceremony with William and Kate in Victoria.

According to The Telegraph, the Grand Chief called the ceremony a "charade," referring to the sensitivity surrounding the relationship between the First Nations groups and the Canadian government. There has been no further comment on why he refused to show up at both events.

Still, William and Kate, who was dressed in an emerald green dress by Dolce & Gabbana, didn't let the disruption get in their way of enjoying their jam-packed day. Following a tour of the campus, the couple met the university's volleyball team and were presented with yet more gifts - UBC jerseys for the two of them, teddy bears for Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
