Theresa May has confirmed that we're going to have an early general election on 8 June. The surprise announcement comes after the Prime Minister had previously ruled out calling a vote until 2020.

Explaining her change of heart, May said in a statement outside Downing Street on Tuesday: "I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election."
