Ben Affleck is one of the latest actors who have come out and condemned the producer Harvey Weinstein following a number of sexual assault and harassment allegations levied against him.
A New York Times report last week kicked off the long line of allegations against the powerhouse producer. Weinstein's lawyers initially said they were going to sue the New York Times and said Weinstein "denies many of the accusations as patently false". In response to a later New Yorker article which included claims of sexual assault, lawyers said: "Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein."
On Tuesday, Affleck, who famously worked with Weinstein when he co-wrote the Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting with Matt Damon in 1997, said he was made to feel sick by some of the allegations.
But the response to Affleck's tweet was very different to that many of the celebs who have spoken out against Weinstein, such as Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio and Blake Lively, received and he soon experienced backlash.
Some people drew comparisons with the fact that Ben's brother Casey Affleck has also been accused of sexual harassment.
In 2010, Casey was sued by two female colleagues who claimed he sexually harassed them while working on movie projects. He denied the allegations and settled both lawsuits with the women out of court.
The allegations resurfaced earlier this year due to his success in the film Manchester by the Sea which he won an Oscar for.
Shortly after, he addressed the allegations in an interview with the Boston Globe where he said: "I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else. There is really nothing I can do about it other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them."
The Casey-related backlash wasn't the only form of criticism for Ben after his tweet as a video clip purporting to show him groping the actress Hilarie Burton (Peyton in One Tree Hill) in 2003 soon resurfaced.
Which led Ben to follow up his first tweet with another one:
While some people applauded his apology, the majority were confused and irritated by it.
Others were plain annoyed that Ben had failed to mention Harvey Weinstein by name in his initial statement:
Hearst UK has approached Affleck for comment.
