On Monday, Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon announced she is running for governor of New York, taking on current governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. In response, former New York City Council member Christine Quinn (who is gay) called Nixon an "unqualified lesbian."
Quinn told the New York Post in an interview Tuesday that Nixon's tendencies don't seem to add up.
"Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City," Quinn said, referring to herself and the fact that Nixon had endorsed de Blasio over her. "Now she wants to be an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn't qualified to be the governor."
Nixon addressed these comments at her campaign launch part on Wednesday night.
"Good evening sisters, brothers, those who reject the gender binary. Welcome. Welcome unqualified lesbians. And qualified ones, too," she jokingly started by saying.
"Yesterday, when I announced my candidacy, one of Governor Cuomo's top surrogates dismissed me as an 'unqualified lesbian.' And I just want to say tonight, that she was technically right. I don't have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, but in my defense, there is a lot of paperwork involved."
After Quinn's comments in the Post went pseudo-viral, she was quick to clarify that her comments weren't really about Nixon's sexual orientation, but her lack of experience. She addressed the issue in a Twitter thread:
