The 'Battle of the Bastards' episode of Game of Thrones was tense to say the least - even more so for star Kit Harington.

One of the most pivotal moments was when his character Jon Snow was trampled on and trapped by hordes of men as he gasps for life.

Although there is a moment when you think he won't make it - to be fair, killing him off twice would be a stretch too far at this point - he comes out of it with a final push.

Yet it seems this scene, which was unscripted, was just as much of a nightmare for Harington, at least according to directors Miguel Sapochnik.

"Kit had mentioned to me that his worst fear is being buried alive," he told The Hollywood Reporter

"So I exploited that to its fullest - and being the amazing game player that he is, he let me."

Harsh, but he certainly got good results.

The director also revealed that the fact the sequence was improvised helped the team to do "a bunch of things so that we had options in the cutting room floor.

"It helped that we didn't really know what we were doing or how we were going to do it in advance."

Sapochnik also explained that they clipped Harington under a fake horse corpse, continuing: "We ran 250 allied troop extras over him with one stunt man lying on top of him that he could both struggle with and would keep him protected in case for any reason things went south.

"Then Sean Savage, our amazing A-cam operator, sat in there with a camera and someone ready to pull him out if things got hairy, and we literally covered them with extras and stunt men."
