A list published today by Box Office Mojo, released details of the highest paid actors and actresses of this year, with Harrison Ford at no. 1, closely followed by Samuel L Jackson.

Perhaps the most important entry in the list is Scarlett Johansson, who came in at no.10, making her the highest paid actress of all time.

Hollywood has been called out on it's lack of diversity before and the recent list shows a distinct lack of women in the top ten.

In the top 30, there are only other four actresses, with Cameron Diaz coming in at no. 19, Helena Bonham Carter at no. 26, Cate Blanchett at no. 29 and Julia Roberts at no. 30.

Johansson, has surpassed all previous actresses in terms of earnings, and at 31 is one of the youngest. Her success is even more of an impressive feat when you consider the sexism in Hollywood that she must've come up against.

When asked about the gender pay gap Johansson said 'I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I'm addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious.'

It appears that she recognises her experience of the industry as unusual, suggesting that there are wider problems to be addressed- it is estimated that women in Hollywood receive only 85 per cent of what their male cohorts earn for similar roles.

Hopefully Johansson's entry into the top ten will pave the way for a discussion about, and recognition of, sexism in Hollywood, leading onto more actresses entering the top ten next year.
