At midnight California time, Taylor Swift's current friend, former boyfriend Calvin Harris released the music video to "My Way," the song many consider to be about Swift. The video features Harris dealing with a brunette robot girlfriend whose connection keeps breaking up. She reappears and is on-off lurking behind him while he broods in the forest. It's a little Westworld and relatively standard sci-fi for a Harris video (see also Gigi Hadid, the science-experiment girl in "How Deep Is Your Love").
There's no glaring Swift reference, but because this is abstract art, there are some things you could interpret as being about her. If the robot is a representation of Swift, for example, there's the suggestion—especially with the song's infamous "Lie awake, two faced" lyric—that what was seen wasn't all real. Remember that a lot of the Swift-Harris relationship publicly played out in the couple's now-deleted Instagrams of each other. Those photos showed Tayvin at their most #couplegoals aspirational:
The disappearing/reappearing girlfriend whose signal keeps breaking up could be a nod to the struggle of being in a long-distance relationship, both literally (satellite phone signals) and emotionally. Swift spent much of her time with Harris apart, traveling on the 1989 tour. He was in the audience a night or two but not frequently.
But perhaps the most telling evidence are the video backdrops and wardrobe choices. Sure, polka-dot dresses and black body-con outfits could just be innocent selections, but when you compare them to Swift's own videos….
Interesting....
