Ryan Reynolds has revealed that Tom Hanks has been such a big influence on his life that his daughter's first words actually came from Hanks himself.

The Deadpool star picked up the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy, and he gave a heartfelt speech about his inspiration at Sunday night's award show.

"I genuinely was not expecting this, I prepared nothing," he began. "So, I'm just going to focus on Tom Hanks."

"No really though, you're a huge influence on me," Reynolds told Hanks, who was in the audience.

"My 2-year-old daughter–the first full sentence she ever said was, 'There's no crying in baseball.' I'm not even kidding."

The line is a reference to Hanks' famous catchphrase in 1992 movie A League of Their Own.

Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, welcomed daughter James back in 2014, and Lively gave birth to their second child back in September this year.

At last night's ceremony in Santa Monica, Reynolds also picked up the Entertainer of the Year award, and in his speech paid tribute to cancer charities the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the SickKids Foundation of Toronto.

"Deadpool was an 11-year odyssey for me to get up here, and it resonated with a lot of people," he said.

"The character had cancer, and some of the people that this character resonated with were sick kids.

"I would like to dedicate this honor to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the SickKids Foundation of Toronto, two incredible organizations that do so much for so many kids in need."
