New mom Chrissy Teigen seems to define "flawless": She's already bounced back to a bikini-ready figure after the April birth of baby Luna, her cookbook's a bestseller, and—let's not forget—John Legend is her husband, after all. But while she might look perfect, she told Delish that moments in her kitchen can look far from it.

"Aside from small kitchen fires usually brought on by the combo of a flame broiler and my love of oil," says Teigen, 31, "there's one kitchen disaster that really sticks out."

Here's how it goes: Teigen and Legend had people over to watch a football game one Sunday, and decided to whip up a batch of scalloped potatoes. Thinly slicing all of those spuds can be a huge time-suck, so Teigen grabbed a mandoline that she'd just bought.

"I gave John the task, and within the first three swipes, he cut the tip of his finger clean off," Teigen says. "He refused medical attention because of whatever was happening at that point in the game, so I told him to go sit and let me 'show him how it's done.' First swipe—first!—I sliced off the exact same finger tip. We have a great photo of us both at the urgent care center."

Now Teigen swears by wearing heavy-duty Kevlar gloves whenever she uses the mandoline. Can't be too careful—and can't let something like a little urgent-care visit keep you from enjoying a dish so insanely popular people request it at every family gathering. Teigen says she makes those scalloped potatoes for every holiday and special occasion, be it game day or Christmas dinner.

"It's my ultimate comfort food," she says. "I love it. It makes people so happy."
