Alexis Bledel's first role following Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life is a very long way from Stars Hollow. The actress will play a prominent supporting role in Hulu's bleak, brutal adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale–Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, set in a dystopian near-future where women are entirely subjugated to men and considered property of the state.

Bledel, whose casting has been kept under wraps until now, stars alongside Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, and Joseph Fiennes in the 10-episode series. Moss plays the lead role of Offred, one of many "handmaids" forced into sexual and reproductive slavery in the household of a military commander. Bledel plays the enigmatic Ofglen, a fellow handmaid who initially seems untrustworthy but develops a complex relationship with Offred.

Orange Is the New Black favorite Wiley plays handmaid-in-training Moira, who is also Offred's college best friend, and her link to life before the collapse of society.

The Handmaid's Tale begins on Hulu from April 26, 2017.
