Tom Hiddleston took home a Golden Globe on Sunday night for his role in the miniseries The Night Manager. During his acceptance speech, he told a story about volunteering in South Sudan — only to run into aid workers who had recently binge-watched his show.
Well-intentioned as it was, the speech did not go over well on social media. Many people seemed to think Tom was just bragging about not only being such a good person, but also acting on a show that some of the most giving humans on earth happen to watch and love.
Now Tom has had time to process it all and realized that the critics were actually right. In a Facebook post, Tom said he was really nervous and it all just came out wrong. All he wanted to do was promote some good causes, he said, and he apologized for flubbing the whole thing.

I just wanted to say… I completely agree that my speech at the Golden Globes last night was inelegantly expressed. In truth, I was very nervous, and my words just came out wrong. Sincerely, my only intention was to salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and World Food Programme, and the children of South Sudan, who continue to find hope and joy in the most difficult conditions. I apologized that my nerves got the better of me.
