London Dungeon has issued an apology after a series of tweets promoting the attraction on Valentine's Day sparked outrage on social media.

The posts, which were part of its 'Dark Valentine' campaign, appeared to instigate fat-shaming and trivialise violence towards sex workers. One tweet, which which has since been deleted, read: "What's the difference between your job and a dead prostitute? Your job still sucks!"

Another said: "Jack the Ripper just messaged. He wants to Netflix and kill," while the "dinner plans" posts said: "I love a girl that's a good eater. Female translation: you're fat".

Understandably, the posts led to a backlash amongst social media users, who slammed the family attraction for its "sexist," "tasteless," and "incredibly offensive" messages.

"They're particularly demeaning towards women and sex workers," Soho Theatre worker Jules Hanworth The Evening Standard. "To be seeing stuff that's so overtly sexualised and offensive when it's supposed to be aimed at families is very disturbing. It's really irresponsible I think."

After the series of tweets was removed, the London Dungeon issued a statement saying it recognised the campaign was inappropriate.

"We apologise that our social posts caused offence," a spokesperson said in a statement. "Our 'Dark Valentine' campaign was a range of posts aimed to highlight the darker side of history and create debate and conversation. As a brand we strive to entertain our guests so they can enjoy the London Dungeon experience – both in our attraction and on social media. However on this occasion we recognise that some of the topics many felt were inappropriate and therefore we apologise for any offence cause."
