After he became the first member of the royal family to be photographed by a gay magazine, Prince William has been shortlisted for a British LGBT Award.

The Evening Standard reports the second-in-line to the throne has been nominated for the Straight Ally award which celebrates community activists and public figures who work to support LGBT rights. As well as his Attitude magazine cover, the prince also starred in a powerful anti-bullying video last year for a charity launched in his mother's memory, the Diana Award.

"The 2017 NatWest British LGBT Awards shortlist features inspirational people who have and continue to use their platform to promote and enhance LGBT rights all over the world," British LGBT Awards founder Sarah Garrett MBE told the newspaper.

"All nominees are absolutely deserving of their place on the shortlist but it is now down to the public to choose their winners ahead of the ceremony which is set to be the biggest yet when it takes place in London on 12 May."

Prince William joins a number of high-profile names who have been nominated in his category. Annie Lennox, Ariana Grande, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, Patrick Stewart, James Corden, Thierry Henry and JK Rowling have also been recognised for their work.
