Taking a cue from the Greenpeace activists who hung a giant banner reading "Resist" on a construction crane behind the White House last month, activists unfurled a 3-by-20-foot banner reading "Refugees Welcome" from the public observation deck of the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday afternoon.

As of Tuesday evening, the National Park Service has yet to identify who hung the banner, which was likely a nod to the statue's symbolism as well as a direct response to the Department of Homeland Security's announcement that they would be expanding immigration enforcement policies. The banner was removed just over an hour later, but not before various people posted pictures of it to social media.

A spokesperson for the Park Service told The Associated Press that hanging anything on the statue is strictly prohibited, and that an investigation is already underway to figure out who was responsible.
