Jimmy Kimmel opened the Academy Awards by paying tribute to everyone's favourite vastly overrated actress, Meryl Streep. Offering a less-than-subtle nod to President Donald Trump's furious tweets over Streep's Golden Globe address, Kimmel kicked off the evening's festivities with the ultimate rebuttal.

'We are here tonight to honour great actors, but we're also here to honour the actors who seem great but actually really aren't," Kimmel said. "And of all the great actors here in Hollywood, one in particular has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances.'

Kimmel continued, calling out a few of Streep's best performances: '[F]rom her mediocre early work in The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa to her underwhelming performances in Kramer v. Kramer and Sophie's Choice, Meryl Streep has phoned it in for more than 50 films over the course of her lackluster career.'

'This is Meryl's twentieth Oscar nomination,' Kimmel concluded. 'Even more, made even more amazing, considering the fact that she wasn't even in a movie this year. We just wrote her name down out of habit. Meryl, stand up, if you would. Everybody, please join me in giving her a totally undeserved round of applause, will you? The highly overrated Meryl Streep, everyone.'

Streep may have tried to shield herself behind her husband, but she couldn't hide from one last barb:

'Nice dress, by the way,' Kimmel said. 'Is that an Ivanka?'

Watch this space for President Donald Trump's inevitable response.
