Eva Mendes was absent from Ryan Gosling's red carpet appearances this awards season, much to the disappointment of fans.

The pair, who are infamously private about their personal lives, have scarcely been seen out together — save a few paparazzi shots here and there and a few event appearances — since they started dating in 2012. And although people were hoping Mendes would accompany her Oscar-nominated beau to the Academy Awards in February, she was missing yet again.

In her new cover story for Shape, Mendes offers some explanation for why she's been missing from the carpet — for this season and many before it.

"What people don't know about me is that I love being home," the actress, 43, told the fitness magazine."Instead of hitting the red carpet, I'd rather be with our girls."

Mendes and Gosling are parents to two daughters, Esmeralda, 2, and Amada, 11 months. According to the La La Land star's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, Mendes was home, taking care of their first child and carrying their second, while he was filming. "If she hadn't had taken all of that on so that I could have this experience, [there] would surely be someone else here other than me today," Gosling said. "So sweetheart, thank you."

But although Mendes would rather be home than making her rounds at awards season, that doesn't mean she's not busy. The actress is also helming her own fashion line for New York & Company and a beauty brand named Circa.
