Last week, Chrissy Teigen opened up about suffering postpartum depression after giving birth to her and John Legend's first child, Luna, in a piece for Glamour magazine. "Most days were spent on the exact same spot on the couch and rarely would I muster up the energy to make it upstairs for bed," she wrote. "John would sleep on the couch with me, sometimes four nights in a row. I started keeping robes and comfy clothes in the pantry so I wouldn't have to go upstairs when John went to work. There was a lot of spontaneous crying."

John Legend himself retweeted the story when it came out and opened up to People yesterday about how proud he was of Teigen for going public with her battle. "I'm glad she wrote about it," he said. "I think it was powerful for her to let a lot of women know they're not alone, and no matter how much money you have or fame, anybody can feel that. And it's hard for anybody no matter how successful you are and how many resources you have."

Legend's priority is to be there for Teigen as she continues coping with PPD (Teigen now takes an antidepressant and is able to manage the symptoms better). "For me as a husband, it was my job to do the best I could to support her and understand what she was going through and do whatever I could do to help her," he said. "I feel like that's the least I could do."

"[As a man] you don't know internally what it feels like," he added, speaking to what advice he'd give to other people trying to support those with PPD. "You should read about it and understand what it is and really just be there to help. You need to be present and you need to be compassionate. And we're all learning and trying to figure it out as we go. At least do that and try to figure it out together."

Teigen praised Legend in her piece for all he's done for her. "He's exactly as compassionate, patient, loving, and understanding as he seems," she wrote. "John has been incredible over the last nine months, bringing me my medicine and watching horrible reality TV with me. He is not the goofiest guy, but he has gone out of his way to indulge my sense of humor. When I was having a good day, he would go to Medieval Times with me and put on the crazy period hat! He sees how much my eyes light up when he does that stuff, and he knows that's what I need. I know he must look over at times and think: My God, get it together. But he has never made me feel that way. He wants me to be happy, silly, and energetic again, but he's not making me feel bad when I'm not in that place."
