Disney Princesses Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, and Ariel are all the badass heroines we admired growing up, but their fearless attitudes and compassionate characters aren't the only things they have in common: These iconic leading ladies are always wearing blue!

Designer Christopher Kane observed the trend in a recent interview with ELLE.com about his new Beauty and the Beast inspired collection saying, "When you think of every Disney heroine—Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine—they're all wearing blue! It's a thing. 'Disney Blue.'"

And Kane is right. From Queen Elsa's icy blue cape to Alice's sky blue dress, Disney does love a signature blue look. But the colour is no coincidence. Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Colour Institute tells Allure that female empowerment is the reason, "You're adding a bit of power to the character by giving her the blue." She adds, "It's a very subtle way of saying, 'Yeah, but young women, young girls, can be empowered, too.'"

If we follow Eiseman's reasoning, it totally makes sense: Jasmine escapes the clutches of the evil Jafar, Belle finds adventure in the great wide somewhere, and Cinderella defies her wicked stepmother by attending the ball and meeting her Prince.

Plus, it goes against gender conforming colours, establishing that blue isn't just for boys after all.

Another reason why blue is such a popular princess colour? It's the colour of the sky, reminding us of positivity and hope. Eiseman says, "It's dependable. It's reliable. It might cloud up, but we know it's there."
