An airline barred two teenagers from travelling on Sunday and required a child to change into a dress after a gate agent told them that leggings were not acceptable flight attire.

United Airlines prevented the two young teens from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis and an even younger girl around the age of 11 was instructed to change from her leggings before flying. The teenagers travelled on a later flight after they had acquired new clothing.

The incident was documented on social media by a fellow passenger, who was shocked by the proceedings.

Incredibly, United has defended its actions, asserting that the girls' leggings were a breech of its dress code policy. Jonathan Guerin, a spokesman for United, said that all three girls were flying as "pass travellers", a company benefit which allows United employees and dependents to travel for free on a standby basis.

These passengers apparently therefore represent the company and are required to dress in a certain way, prohibiting Lycra and spandex leggings, tattered or ripped jeans, midriff shirts, flip-flops or any article of clothing that shows their undergarments.

"It's not that we want our standby travelers to come in wearing a suit and tie or that sort of thing," he said. "We want people to be comfortable when they travel as long as it's neat and in good taste for that environment."

The move has received backlash from various high-profile United travellers.

Evidently, United has little grasp of the athleisure trend.
