After months of consulting on policy, accompanying her father on official business, and sitting in on meetings with foreign leaders, Ivanka Trump is making it official and joining the administration. According to The New York Times, which broke the news this afternoon, Donald Trump's elder daughter will become "assistant to the president," a job that pays exactly as well as your first internship—in other words, not at all.

In a statement released this afternoon, Trump said she decided to take the unpaid position, stating:

I have heard the concerns some have with my advising the president in my personal capacity while voluntarily complying with all ethics rules, and I will instead serve as an unpaid employee in the White House office, subject to all of the same rules as other federal employees.

Trump, whose husband, Jared Kushner, is a senior adviser to the president, continued: "Throughout this process I have been working closely and in good faith with the White House counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role."

Her lawyer, Jamie S. Gorelick, added that the move signaled "her commitment to compliance with federal ethics standards and her openness to opposing points of view."
