A new study called 'The Experience of Secrecy' from Columbia Business School found that on average, participants were keeping 13 secrets at any one time.

Combining the findings from 10 different pieces of research, they also found that the most common secrets people are hiding from their significant others.

The most common secret people were concealing was 'extra-relational thoughts'. Sadly, 'sexual behaviour' was the second most popular. Next came 'lies', 'romantic desire' and 'violate trust'.

The study also concluded that keeping these secrets can have some pretty negative effects on people's mental health (and on their relationship too). Those who were hiding things spent twice as much time thinking, dwelling, worrying about those very secrets. Basically, they obsess over them.

So even if being honest and open in your relationship isn't the reason you tell your partner the full truth, it's best to spill the beans for your own sake at least.
