Elisabeth Moss has played numerous characters subjected to casual sexism in the workplace during her soaring career – but sadly those experiences haven't been limited to her on-screen personas.

The actress has revealed that a TV project she recently pitched was rejected for being 'too female'. Thankfully, the series is happening now in case you were wondering, and it's doing just fine...

'I have experienced [sexism in the workplace] in pitching something that is female-led,' the 34-year-old Handmaid's Tale star told Digital Spy. 'I have been told that it was too female. By [male] executives.

'Everything was too female. It was a female lead, a female protagonist, it was led by a woman. It was too female. I was shocked by it. I won't say specifically [what it was]. It was recently.

'It was in the last couple of years. It's shocking. It's almost illegal.'

She went on: 'It wasn't said to my face. I would dare a male executive to say it to my face now. You get feedback. We did fine.

'We're making it, it's fine. Just not with those people who thought it was too female!'

Elisabeth currently stars as Offred in the gripping ten-part TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's contemporary classic The Handmaid's Tale.

Set in a dystopian future, Offred is forced into sexual servitude to bear children for the infertile wives of the elite, living under a totalitarian theocracy that has overthrown the American government.

Most terrifying of all, the majority of the harrowing issues highlighted in both the series and novel have been inflicted upon women at some point across the world.

As property of the state, and under a military dictatorship, Offred becomes the enforced concubine of The Commander (Joseph Fiennes) in order to conceive for his wife Serena (Yvonne Strahovski).

The Handmaid's Tale continues on Channel 4 at 9pm on Sunday (June 4).
