On Wednesday, The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the death toll from the terrorist incident had risen from seven to eight after the body of a French national was recovered from the River Thames.

The police said the body was found on Tuesday downstream from the bridge. The force says formal identification has not yet taken place, but Xavier Thomas' next of kin have been informed.

Thomas, 45, was walking with his girlfriend over the bridge when the attack began on Saturday night.

Police said earlier that witness accounts suggested Thomas might have been thrown into the river. Thomas' girlfriend was struck and seriously injured by the van.

Ignacio Echeverria

The siblings of a 39-year-old banker said their brother was one of the eight people killed.

Ignacio Echeverria was last seen lying on the ground near London Bridge after he confronted the assailants with a skateboard. His sister Isabel wrote on Facebook: "My brother Ignacio tried to stop some terrorists and lost his life trying to save others."

Echeverria's elder brother Joaquin told the Associated Press that a diplomatic process had begun for relatives to see the victim's body and to eventually take him back to Spain.

Echeverria was originally from Spain and worked in the British capital as a financial risks analyst for HSBC. Spain's government said it was "deeply saddened" after receiving confirmation by British authorities that Echeverria was among the victims.

Sebastien Belanger

French chef Sebastien Belanger was confirmed dead by France's foreign ministry.

In a statement, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: "It was with great sadness that I learned that one of the French, formerly missing, has been identified among the deceased and I offer my condolences to the family of our compatriot."

The Evening Standard reports the 36-year-old worked as a chef at London's Coq d'Argent restaurant. He had been at the Boro Bistro on the south side of the bridge where he was watching football with two friends.

Belanger's girlfriend Gerda Bennet shared a picture on Facebook with the caption, "Mon amour".

Sara Zelenak

Relatives of Australian Sara Zelenak confirmed she was killed in the London attacks over the weekend.

The 21-year-old worked as a nanny in the capital and had previously been described as missing after the attacks Saturday night.

Her aunt, Tara, said Zelenak's mother Julie Wallace broke down when she learned of her daughter's death while travelling to Britain.

Tara posted on Facebook: "Even though there was limbo for days, there was still a bit of hope."

Australian nurse Kirsty Boden, 28, is also among the seven killed. Speaking at the launch of the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney, Prince Harry shared his praise for Australians living in London.

Harry said: "Australians form an important and vibrant part of the fabric of life in London and we are reminded of that in good times and bad." He said his heart went out to the victims, their friends and families.

Kirsty Boden

Police identified Australian nurse Kirsty Boden as a victim of the attack, releasing a statement from her family praising her work and her effort to help other victims.

The Metropolitan Police issued a statement Tuesday on behalf of her family.

"Kirsty was loved and adored by her family, friends and boyfriend," they said. "She was the most outgoing, kind and generous person who loved to help people. Helping people was what she loved to do in her job as a nurse and in her daily life."

They added: "As she ran towards danger, in an effort to help people on the bridge, Kirsty sadly lost her life."

The family said her actions "demonstrate how selfless, caring and heroic she was, not only on that night, but throughout all of her life." The police did not elaborate on how she was killed.

Australian media reported that Boden was 28 and from Loxton in southern Australia. Another Australian woman, Sara Zelenak, has been reported missing since the attack.

Alexandre Pigeard

French media named a French citizen who was among those killed as Alexandre Pigeard, 27, from Normandy. Reports say he moved to London two-and-a-half years ago and he was working on Saturday night at a Borough market restaurant called Borough Bistro.

Another seven French nationals are also believed to have been injured in the attack, with four in a critical condition.

James McMullan

The sister of a missing 32-year-old man said he died in the attacks on Saturday night.

Melissa McMullan told Sky News on Monday that police said her brother James McMullan's bank card was found on one of the bodies after the attack, which claimed seven victims.

She said authorities are "unable to formally identify him until the coroner's report begins tomorrow."

McMullan described her brother as an "inspiration". She said he lived in Hackney in east London and was last seen outside a pub just before the van and knife attacks began.

"While our pain will never diminish, it is important for us all to carry on with our lives in direct opposition to those who wish to destroy us," she said.

"And remember that hatred is the refuge of small-minded individuals and will only breed more. This is not a course we will follow despite our loss."

Christine Archibald

30-year-old Christine Archibald, from British Columbia in Canada, was the first victim to be named. The Archibald family paid tribute to "beautiful, loving daughter and sister" in a statement released by the Canadian government. They said that she worked in a homeless shelter until she moved to Europe to be with her fiancé, Tyler Ferguson.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Ferguson's sister Cassie said that the couple were walking together on the bridge when Archibald was hit by the attackers and died in her fiancé's arms. In a message on Facebook, she said that her brother had "lost the love of his life".

Her family said Archibald "would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death."

They asked those who want to honour her to volunteer their time or donate to a homeless shelter and to tell them "Chrissy sent you. "

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he is "heartbroken" by the news. "Canada strongly condemns the senseless attack that took place last night in London, United Kingdom, which killed and injured many innocent people," he said in a statement on Sunday. "I am heartbroken that a Canadian is among those killed."
