Earlier this month, a 1995 letter from Tupac to Madonna was unearthed and put up for auction by Gotta Have It! Collectibles for a starting bid of $100,000. The auction was set to begin today and go through July 28. But, today, Madonna put a stop to the auction of the letter—along with a number of other, far more personal items—which would have been sold to the creepiest bidder.
Among the 22 items halted for bid today, was the letter, Madonna's "personally worn" panties, and her DNA. Thankfully, a judge put a stop to the auction of 22 items, including those three, on her behalf.
"The fact that I have attained celebrity status as a result of success in my career does not obviate my right to maintain my privacy, including with regard to highly personal items," Madonna said in court papers obtained by the Associated Press. "I understand that my DNA could be extracted from a piece of my hair. It is outrageous and grossly offensive that my DNA could be auctioned for sale to the general public."
According to the New York Daily News, Madonna had no idea the items were taken, and learned about the letter through widespread media reports. The singer blames her "former friend" Darlene Lutz for allegedly stealing the items when she helped Madonna pack up her house for a move.
"I became aware through media reports that there was a planned auction of extremely personal, private correspondence I received from a former boyfriend, the late recording artist and actor Tupac Shakur," Madonna said.
