***SPOILER ALERT***

Game of Thrones season 7's long-awaited reunion between Arya and Sansa Stark has seen the sisters at loggerheads over that letter which Littlefinger so cleverly uncovered.

The letter in question was written by Sophie Turner's character back in season 1, when Cersei forced her to ask her family to bend the knee and call her own father a traitor.

While Sansa was coerced into writing it, her assassin sister has refused to cut her any slack, and now with Jon Snow absent from Winterfell the pair are further apart than ever before.

Now the cast and creators have spoken out about what exactly is transpiring between the two sisters – could they turn on each other? Is Arya actually bluffing with a plan to take down Petyr Baelish? Or will Bran have to intervene in all his super-weird-wisdom?

Perhaps the most interesting point came from the master manipulator himself Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger, who is played by Aidan Gillen.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor mused that while Sansa and Arya are at odds, the new Lord of the Vale's plan is coming together – frustratingly, this is exactly what he wants.

"Watching my plan come to fruition is quite something," he said. "There's all kinds of mixed things going on with Littlefinger and that relationship with Sansa. So watching her grow in stature is quite enjoyable.

"With carefully laid plans there's always a bit of risk involved. He puts himself in a situation that could backfire on him. I think he likes it. His plans are never fail-safe. But he puts himself on the line like a good gambler."

A recent fan theory echoed that Littlefinger's character is in fact winning the Game of Thrones right now – as his enemies suffer massive losses, he's slowly assembling more land, a larger army and a powerfully-placed ally in Sansa Stark.

However, the actor did also hint that his seemingly romantic interest in Sansa has been misinterpreted by fans during a recent interview – so what could he actually be after?

As for the rift between Arya and Sansa, showrunner Dan Weiss explained: "They've all become very different people.

"You would think a family reunion among three siblings should be unalloyed joy, and to an extent it is. But there's a lot of tension and anxiety under the surface because we don't know how they're going to relate to each other now."

Co-executive producer Bryan Cogman added that their adolescent rivalry from season one is coming back to haunt them in a big way.

He explained: "Sansa and Arya are characters who were never close and never particularly liked each other and have been through so much.

"Now they have more in common than either are probably willing to recognise. Just because the Starks have reunited doesn't mean it's going to be sunshine and roses."

Showrunner Weiss felt the family have all changed so dramatically that it was inevitable they'd struggle to connect, especially with Bran acting like a weird robot man.

He said: "Bran has grown farther apart from his siblings than any normal person could ever grow, but is there anything left of him in there? How much of Arya is Arya Stark of Winterfell and how much is the Faceless Men?

"Sansa has undergone her training, for good or for ill, under Littlefinger's supervision. So how much of that Machiavellian quality has rubbed off on her? And what does that do?"

Meanwhile, Sophie Turner felt that the fact the sister's refuse to communicate about what they've both endured is a key issue, especially as now "it's vital". She added that what's happening is "like a f**king horror movie".

With Brienne sent away, Littlefinger's bloody suggestion that Sansa could set her knights on her deadly sister and Game of Thrones' track record for unhappy endings, we can only imagine bad things on the horizon for the Stark sisters.

The final trailer of Game of Thrones' season 7 finale hinted at another big clash between two huge characters (literally), and rumours abound that the final episode could leak after the latest threats by HBO hackers.

Game of Thrones Season 7 concludes on Sunday, August 27 in the US and Monday, August 28 in the UK.
